Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) is a white, granular powder with a high solubility in water. It is a strong chelating agent and, as a high alkaline compound, it is also widely used as a buffering agent to help control pH levels in a solution.

It is used in heavy detergents and cleaning agents to remove hard water stains and mineral build-up, within the water treatment industry to remove heavy metals and other impurities from water. In cosmetics, tetrasodium pyrophosphate is used as an anticaking agent and food grade TSPP has the function of acidity regulator, emulsifier, raising agent, sequestrant and stabiliser. It also used in oral care products as a tooth whitener and stain remover.
