Glutaraldehyde

Glutaral Solution, 1,5-Pentanediol Solution, Glutaraldehyde Solution, GA

Cas Number : 111-30-8
EC Number : 203-856-5

Glutaraldehyde is a clear, colourless to pale yellow liquid with a pungent odour. Readily biodegradable this product was first produced commercially over 60 years ago and is most frequently utilised in an aqueous solution between 1 and 50%.

Despite sharing the same chemical family name of ‘aldehyde’ glutaraldehyde is not the same as formaldehyde – Glutaraldehyde neither contains nor degrades into formaldehyde and their toxicological profiles and chemical properties differ completely.

Monarch’s Glutaraldehyde is BPR (Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) 528/2012) certified.

Uses of glutaraldehyde:

Sterilant and disinfectant
Glutaraldehyde solution is used as a high level sterilant to disinfect surgical instruments and other heat-sensitive medical equipment.

Water Treatment
Glutaraldehyde is used in water treatment across cooling water, process water systems and reverse osmosis membranes as a highly effective biocide for the control of microbes.

Leather tanning agent
Used as an alternative to chrome tanning, glutaraldehyde offers rapid tanning action over a wide pH range (compared to conventional vegetable tanning processes which takes longer). The results are better stability of leather in terms of shrinkage and resistance to deterioration. Leathers treated this was also exhibit improved elasticity, less evidence of brittleness, cracking, improved suppleness and extended life.

Leather tanning with glutaraldehyde can also be combined with mineral tannings such as chrome, aluminium or veg such as wattle and chestnut.
