Calcium Formate
Calcium Diformate, Calcium Salt, Calcoform
Calcium Formate is the calcium salt of formic acid. It is a white to pale yellow, crystalline powder with a very slight acidic odour. The product possesses great versatility and is used widely in industrial operations and also features heavily as a common additive in a number of everyday products.
Calcium formate is a common component in adhesive, cement and grout products where it increases hardness, reduces setting time and inhibits the formation of efflorescence (deposits of crystalline salt on the surface caused by water). Other applications include use in the leather tanning industry where it acts as a masking agent in chrome tanning processes, as a key ingredient in some de-icing formulations and it is also found in the manufacture of safety air bags, where, when mixed with ammonium nitrate and ignited, it creates a non-toxic gas to assist in the rapid deployment and inflation of automobile safety air bags.
In the agricultural industry, this product can be used in both feed and field, used as a crop regulator or as an ensiling treatment in order to promote the formation of lactic acid during anaerobic fermentation. It is also applied as an additive in many feeds where it provides a number of benefits including promoting digestion and absorption whilst protecting against diseases.
